Tool for soil vitality

NMI has developed a tool, Symbiont, to measure the on-site biological soil quality and to give recommendations on cultivation and/or soil management. The instrument consists of a measuring set of indicators and target values for different crops and soil types. Growers can use the tool to work on soil quality, yield and harvest certainty.

Varied and active soil organisms ensure the supply of nutrients, a proper, friable soil structure, and prevention of plant diseases. Organic matter also affects this and is easier to manage. It is therefore important to know when and what attention to soil biodiversity is needed.

Symbiont uses knowledge about measuring protocols, target values (per indicator), interpretation and actions (fertilisation, crop rotation and soil tillage).
